Dice
Standard Dice
Standard dice are known as candy store or drug store dice. They are not made with as much precision as the perfect dice that are used by casinos. Standard dice typically have rounded edges that make for easier rolling action and are usually one quarter inch square. The most common material that is used in the making of standard dice is plastic. However, wood, stone, glass, and various other metals are sometimes used. Standard dice favor the high numbers because of the indentations on the dice. The indentations make the dice lighter on the sides with the most indentations and this is what swings the odds in favor of rolling a high number when using non-perfect dice. This effect is very small and can only be seen when a very large number of rolls is recorded. In the United States, the dots on the face of the dice are referred to as spots but in the United Kingdom they are sometimes called pips. The opposite sides of standard dice should add up to seven and there are two ways of arranging the dots. The two ways in which the dots could be arranged mirror one another. Thus, there are left and right handed dice.
Perfect Casino Dice
Perfect casino dice are made with the greatest of precision and are usually hand made to within a tolerance of 0.0005 of an inch. The holes that are drilled into perfect casino dice are refilled with weighted substances that make the weight of the dice perfect. Thus, perfect casino dice give an equal chance to the shooter of rolling any given number. Casino dice are arranged in a right handed format and most casino dice are transparent red. Casinos have begun to increasingly use dice that have serial numbers printed on them in order to sure that the dice are not switched out for crooked dice that could give a cheating player an advantage.
Crooked Dice
Lead, gold, or platinum can be added to the sides of dice in order to make the odds favor the cheating player. Dice that are weighted to favor numbers other than seven are called Passers and those that are weighted to favor landing on seven are called Missouts. |
