Betting Terms

There is an enormous variety to the amount of bets that can be placed at a craps table. Some of these bets produce bigger payouts and some give the house a better advantage. A bet of any craps is a bet that the shooter will roll a two, three, or 12 on their next roll. The house enjoys a 11.1% advantage on an any craps bet and pays out at a seven to one ratio. A three-way craps bet is virtually the same as an any craps bet with the exception being that a wager is placed on each individual craps number (two, three, and 12). An any seven bet is a bet that a seven will be rolled next by the shooter. An any seven bet pays out at a four to one ratio and gives the house a 16.7% advantage.

Big six and big eight bets stay true to their name as they allow a player to bet that either a six or an eight will be rolled before a seven is rolled. These big six and big eight bets give the house a 1.5% advantage. A lay bet is a bet that a particular number will not be rolled before a seven is rolled. The house generally makes 5% commission on lay bets and most casinos take the commission up front. Players can also make hard way bets. A hard way is a bet on a four six, eight or ten. The hard way bet only wins if the two dice show the same number. For example, if an eight is rolled, the dice must show four each in order for a hard way bet to be a winner. If an eight is rolled by the dice showing five and three, the hard way bet is not a winner. There are two types of place bets. A place bet to win is a bet that a four, five, six, eight, nine, or 10 will be rolled before a seven comes up. A place bet to lose is a bet that a seven will be rolled before the number bet on comes up.
